Smart building meets healthcare
Rethinking preventive medicine - with intelligent building technology
At the Buff Medical Resort in Constance, medical excellence, innovative health concepts and first-class hotel comfort meet state-of-the-art smart building technology. Covering over 20,000 square metres, 118 luxurious rooms and a 5,000 square metre medical area combine to create a unique place for regeneration and prevention. With one of the few cardio-MRI machines in Germany and the opportunity to experience a simulated high-altitude climate, we are setting new standards – made technically possible by advanced building automation from Gira.
Modular intelligence with a system: The Gira HomeServer in use
Seven sub-projects – one intelligent whole
Our technical infrastructure is based on a modular KNX architecture, which is subdivided into seven self-sufficient sub-systems. Each system is controlled by its own Gira HomeServer. Communication between the sub-systems takes place via Gira F1 – but only with selectively filtered information, for example for synchronised façade lighting.
This sophisticated system guarantees maximum reliability and flexibility. If one area is affected, the functionality of the other areas remains fully intact.
User-friendly and secure
Using the Gira QuadClient visualisation interface, not only our technicians but also our medical teams can directly access relevant parameters – for example to control the altitude climate in the guest rooms. Thanks to end-to-end KNX IP secure encryption, communication is protected at all times.
Maintenance is also carried out efficiently and securely: our technical partners can use the Gira S1 to service each sub-system remotely – data-secure and time-saving.
Smart room climate control meets medical precision
High-altitude climate for restful, therapeutic sleep
A highlight at the Buff Medical Resort is the opportunity to experience a simulated altitude climate in the guest rooms. This has a positive effect on the immune system – especially during sleep. A sensor concealed in the room continuously measures the oxygen saturation, which is controlled via the Gira HomeServer. The values are documented and can be adjusted by medical staff directly via the QuadClient.
Intuitive operation by guests
Our guests control the room functions via the Gira G1 multi-touch display – from the lighting and curtains to the insect screen. The altitude climate value prescribed by the doctor can also be viewed here. This is supplemented by Gira touch sensors with self-explanatory symbols – also ideal for our international guests.
Energy efficiency and sustainability - implemented automatically
Conserving resources through smart systems
The building technology supports our sustainability goals on many levels. For example, our clinic software communicates directly with the Gira HomeServer – and only activates functions such as lighting, heating or altitude climate control in occupied rooms. Window contacts also ensure that the control system is automatically switched off when the window is open.
A central ‘Eco’ switch on the door puts the room into energy-saving mode when you leave – a contribution to efficient energy use.
Intelligent control in public areas
In the communal areas, presence detectors analyse user behaviour and timers adjust the brightness depending on the time of day. Together with renewable energies and structural measures, we fulfil the KfW ‘Efficiency House 55’ standard – sustainably conceived, intelligently implemented.
Design meets function: smart can also be beautiful
Our standards do not end with technology and medicine – we also focus on quality in the interior. The purist Gira E2 switch range in matt black is one of the products we use. The multi-award-winning design emphasises the aesthetics of our company and stands for durability and functionality.
Conceived in partnership - realised regionally
Strong together thanks to regional expertise
Instead of relying on a general contractor, we relied on a strong network of regional partners. Each phase was closely coordinated in regular project meetings. The division into seven independent KNX projects enabled parallel commissioning – efficiently and dynamically.
Conclusion: Technology in the service of health
At the Buff Medical Resort, we consistently rely on smart technologies – not as an end in itself, but as an integral part of a medically well thought-out, sustainable and comfortable stay. Intelligent building and room automation from Gira forms the technological backbone of our vision: healthcare like no other.
